Founded in 1904, The American Lung Association is the oldest nationwide voluntary health organization in the United States. It was formed to fight tuberculosis (TB), which at the time was the nation's chief cause of death. The American Lung Association of Colorado was established just four years later in 1908. As national and state efforts to treat and prevent TB succeeded, the lung associations expanded their activities to include preventing all types of lung diseases.
