Sickle
Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetically inherited blood
disorder prevalent among people of African, Caribbean,
Central/South American, East Indian, Middle Eastern,
Mediterranean, Asian and Southeast Asian ancestry.
Although SCD is the most common genetic condition in the
world, many people have never heard of, or have been
tested for it. Sickle cell and beta thalassemia
traits/disease were introduced to North America through
migration, but are indigenous to all of the other
populations mentioned where malaria is endemic. These
genetic mutations developed over thousands of years as a
result of the human body's natural immune response against
malaria. DONATE
