This is the centennial year of the American Red Cross. Volunteers have made a huge impact on the great organization over the last 100 years along with people donating cars to help support the mission of the American Red Cross. The mission of the Red Cross states, “The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.” Here are some of the programs that the American Red Cross offers to communities around the world:
Preparing for Disaster
Often when you think of the American Red Cross you think of relief given when a disaster strikes, but the organization also focuses on disaster preparedness. The American Red Cross is working to help reduce the vulnerability of communities and individuals if they are ever part of an emergency. Preparation is one of the best ways to reduce the economic and social damage that can be caused by a disaster.
Relief in Disasters
The Red Cross is called in when an emergency strikes to help meet communities immediate needs. The American Red Cross addresses the basic needs of people by supplying healthcare services, food, and shelter during a disaster. Preserving or returning to independent normal daily activities is the goal for the Red Cross for the community that it is servicing.
Training and Education
Lifesaving skills training is provided by the Red Cross such as CPR, lifeguarding, and caregiving courses. Everyday people are required to use lifesaving skills in their jobs such as first responders, health care providers, and lifeguards. Also, occupations such as babysitting and teaching can require important lifesaving knowledge.
Not Just America
The Red Cross is part of a global organization to help people internationally. The organization provides basic needs to other parts of the world during an emergency or a disaster. They help reconnect families that have been separated because of disaster or conflict.
The American Red Cross is committed to supporting the veterans, families, and the U.S. military by providing emergency aid and assistance for military members along with an increased ability to help others.
