We all experience difficult times in our lives where we may feel like we are at the end of our rope. What a difference it makes to have a loved one reach out at those times to lift us up and help us get through it.

The same is true, although perhaps on a much smaller scale, for animals. When a pet is abandoned or lost, recovering from an injury or medical treatment, or needs help with behavioral issues, having a loving temporary home to stay can give them that “lift” to get through.  This is where being a foster parent for an animal can truly help save a life.

The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City encourages people to volunteer in becoming a foster parent for an animal in need. They have been serving lost and abandoned pets in the community for over 100 years. When opting to donate a car in Kansas City, the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City is a great charity to support in helping to save and enhance the lives of these precious little souls.

Becoming a Foster Parent for an Animal

Fostering a pet can be a most rewarding experience because not only do you get to revel in the love and joy of that animal, you are allowed the opportunity to enrich their lives and prepare them for a forever home.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Be sure that animals are allowed in your home. If you rent, get your landlord’s approval.
  • Ask all the members of your home if they would be in favor of bringing an animal into their living space. It’s best to have every member of the household on board.
  • It is most optimal if you have an extra room in your home, in case the animal needs to be kept separate from other pets.
  • Being flexible is very helpful when fostering. Schedules should allow for play time, potential pet visits, socializing, and adoption meet ups.
  • While no prior medical knowledge is required, you will want to be comfortable following a veterinarians directions for your foster animal. You may need to provide transportation for the pet to follow-up appointments.
  • If you fall in love with your foster pet and decide you would like to adopt him or her, you typically will have first choice in adopting them.
  • The average stay for an animal in foster care is 2 to 4 weeks. Each situation is different, though. If the pet is recovering from a minor surgery like a neuter or spaying, they will need to stay with you at least for 24 to 48 hours.

The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City provides applications to foster dogs and to foster cats.

An animal living in your home gives them a reprieve from shelter life and helps them become more adoptable. This also frees up space in the shelter for more animals who might otherwise be euthanized. Saving lives make you a true hero.

If you cannot foster an animal right now, you can still support an animal in need when you donate a car to an animal charity like the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City. It’s fast and easy to donate using our online form and we provide free towing of your car.
