Here are 14 simple ways you can save energy right in your own home:
- Set your thermostat between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, or between 64 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit . Each degree over 20 Celsius or 68 Fahrenheit can increase your heating bill by 10%. During the summer, set it at 26 degrees Celsius or 78 degree Fahrenheit or higher. Also, turn off your heat or AC when you leave the room. Close the vents in areas not being used.
- Replace your lightbulbs to energy efficient globes. They will save you power and last longer.
- Run your clothes washer using cold water. You can save approximately $115 yearly by washing your clothes in cold water. Save more by choosing the shortest appropriate wash cycle and by waiting to start your washer with a full load instead of ½ full.
- Run your refrigerator more efficiently by ensuring the door seal is tight and free of gaps so the cold air isn’t escaping. Set your fridge temperature to 4 or 5 degrees Celsius or 39 to 41 degree Fahrenheit and your freezer is -15 to -18 degrees Celsius or 5 to 0 degrees Fahrenheit . Twice a year, pull your fridge out and vacuum the coils to ensure it runs at maximum efficiency.
- Save energy in your kitchen by defrosting frozen items in your fridge to lessen the time it takes to cook. Use your microwave more often as it takes less energy than an electric oven. When cooking on your stove, keep the lids on the pots to shorten cooking time. Run your dishwasher only when it’s full and use the economy cycle.
- Check your attic insulation and increase it if necessary. An insulated ceiling can make a big difference to your energy bills.
- Turn your computer off when you aren’t using it, instead of leaving it in standby mode.
- Install a low flow-shower head for your shower. Practice taking quicker showers instead of bathing. Baths use much more water than a typical shower.
- Unplug devices that aren’t being used. After an item is charged, unplug it.
- Turn the tap water off while brushing your teeth.
- Watch less TV and read a book instead. It’s been proven that reading a book is more relaxing than watch TV and it doesn’t require electricity to do it.
- Close curtains and blinds at night to keep cold air out. For really cold rooms, consider thick curtains or curtain linings to increase the energy saving ability.
- Weatherize your home by sealing air leaks that are around your home. Places to check would be your vents, doors and windows. Ensure there are no openings or cracks and seal them up if you find them using caulk or weather stripping as needed.
- Wrap your water heater with an insulating jacket which typically costs less than $20 and can save a lot of energy throughout the year.
