One of the premier attractions for visitors in Boston is the New England Aquarium, boasting over 1.3 million visitors each year. And understandably so with four levels of detailed aquarium exhibits, duck tours, harbor seals, whale watching, IMAX theater, and dining, this place is a hot spot for students, families and marine-lovers alike.

Yet, what the everyday visitor may not know is that the New England Aquarium (NEA) is a global leader in marine conservation and ocean exploration. For about half a century, the NEA has been open and providing up-and-coming scientific research and advocating for vibrant oceans. They constitute a significant public education resource for the entire region.

This is why we recommend the NEA for your marine conservation car donation

Animal Exhibits

Thousands of aquatic animals call the NEA their home. You will find the east coast’s largest shark and ray touch tank here as well as the four-story coral reef home of the green sea turtle Myrtle. The Giant Ocean Tank can’t been missed, either.

Visitors can meet aquatic animals by the thousands at the Aquarium. From the formidable lion fish to the fragile leafy sea dragon, bumbling green sea turtle and vivacious California sea lions in full force, numerous animals await to awe and inspire guests.

Whale Watch

Partnering with Boston Harbor Cruises, guests of the Aquarium get to view the ocean’s most captivating and impressive animals with front-seat views. The Whale Watch promises you will see whales at the Stellwagon Bank Marine Sanctuary which is one of Earth’s most active marine sanctuaries. Home of many types of large whales, including minke whales, acrobatic humpback whales, pilot whales and finback whales, the Stellwagen bank also features dolphins, seabirds and other marine life.

Learning Programs

Providing educational resources and activities is another perk of the Aquarium. Teacher and school kids can take advantage of Aquarium field trips or traveling programs that come to their school. The Aquarium also offers volunteer programs, employment opportunities and courses for teenagers interested as well as programs for organizations that are community-based.

Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life

The hands-on scientific side of the NEA can be found in the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life. This is where pioneering marine conservation research is combined with strategic partnerships for a formidable summoned power to fight the negative impacts on our oceans. The center makes an impact in areas like the following:

  • Transforming science into positive impact
  • Safeguarding the health of our natural resources
  • Using fundamental science to understand problems
  • It is a scientific home for study
  • Solve locally and then scale for global impact
  • Having an impact on conservation leaders around the world
  • Positive agents of change for the ocean
  • Funded 140 projects in more than 40 countries across 6 continents
  • Working with industry and environmental groups
  • Inspire everyone to work to protect our oceans

Protecting Endangered Species

Over 40,000 animal species in the world are considered at risk of extinction, or otherwise “endangered”. The Aquarium and their Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life are both committed to keeping the ocean healthy and allowing endangered species to thrive, not just survive.

Working with policy makers and the fishing industry, the Aquarium works hard to protect the most defenseless animals on the planet. Projects include:

  • Protecting endangered North Atlantic right whales
  • Attending to hundreds of endangered sea turtles cold-stunned on Cape Cod each year
  • Shielding African penguins with a Species Survival Plan
