The Artisan College of Cosmetology knows that everyone deserves to feel beautiful. This can be even truer when their clients have struggles in their lives. They recently had the Alzheimer’s Association come to educate them on how to help those that have Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Marty Williman, Northwest Ohio Chapter education manager for Alzheimer’s Association, provided tips for cosmetology students on how to deal with those with Alzheimer’s. Williman said professionals typically recommend people to approach from the front, but cosmetologists generally work behind the person. So to help reduce stress, they can explain step by step of what they are doing while helping the client.

Also, a short-term memory is particularly affected, so hairdressers should avoid questions like “what did you have for breakfast?” and instead ask the client to talk more generally about their family or perhaps their memories from growing up.

Williman said it’s important to avoid baby talk as well as a high-pitched voice.
“Always talk to the person at the adult level,” she said. “Always. Talk to them with respect … Treat every person as the adult that they are.”

When presenting to schools, Williman asked students to raise their hands if they know someone who has been affected by Alzheimer’s. About 25 percent raised their hands. Chances are you know someone, too. Alzheimer’s affects over five million American’s. Once diagnosed, the typical lifespan is eight to twelve years. No cure has been found, only medications to slow it down. If you would like to help with this cause, you can donate a vehicle to the Alzheimers Association.
