Three Simple Food Habits to Follow This Year
1. Drink More Water.
Cut back on the high calorie sports drinks and soda, or cut them out completely and just drink water. Add a spritz of lime or lemon for taste. It’s so much better for you and helps clean out the toxins from your body faster. Drink a glass of water when you first feel hungry as it can often ward off eating for a while and help you eat less. Consider getting a large water bottle and commit to drinking it until empty 4 or 5 times each day.
2. Eat More Whole Grains.
When you choose your pasta, bread and crackers, choose whole grains. There are many more nutrients in whole grain food and they fill you up faster. Whole grains can have a lot of fiber and adults need about 25 to 35 grams of fiber each day. Fiber can also help control blood sugar, reduce colon cancer risk, lower blood pressure and lower LDL cholesterol. Not all whole grains are rich in fiber, so you may want to focus on bulgur, barley and oats for the most fiber.
3. Choose a Healthier Breakfast.
Pass on the pastries, sugar filled cereal, pancakes, and muffins for breakfast. Instead, start your mornings on a bright note by feeding your body what it needs to start the day. Choose oatmeal using steel cut oats, avocado toast on whole grain bread, egg white omelet with your favorite veggies, or low-fat yogurt with granola and grapes. Even some low fat cheese cubes with an apple and some walnuts would be a great choice. Maybe a healthy smoothie is what will get you going in the morning. The key is, give up the fat and sugar-filled morning food and switch to something more healthy.
These three simple habits that you incorporate in your life each day can help make this year a much healthier and happier year. And who knows, you may even lose those pounds you want and get in better shape as a result!
