Do we need a reason to give blood? Maybe a friend asked us to, or we might have a friend or loved one who needs blood some day. Perhaps we feel it’s simply the right thing to do.
Donating blood might feel intimidating are even scary for many people. However, it’s time to put those worries aside. Here are some things that blood donors have said about it:
- “Go ahead and do it, it’s not bad at all”
- “Donating blood is easy.”
- “For first time donating, just drink plenty of fluids.”
- “Eat something before you come to have a successful donation.”
- “Go ahead and do it, even if you’re afraid of needles.”
- “The best part is, they have the best snacks afterwards.”
- “It’s not that difficult, you can do this.”
Five Steps for Donating Blood
1. Come Prepared:
Eat a light meal or snack and drink plenty of liquids. It’s important to come well hydrated. Bring two forms of identification like your drivers licence and your donor card. Also, have a list of all the medications you are taking.
You will find staff members there to sign you in and review your eligibility information. You will be given information about donating and to show your identification.
3. Mini Physical:
During a private interview, you will need to answer some questions about your health history and also any foreign places you may have traveled. Your temperature, pulse, hemoglobin level and blood pressure will be checked.
Your actual blood donation will take around eight to ten minutes. You will be able to sit and relax comfortably for this safe and sterile process. Staff members or volunteers will be there to answer any questions you have.
Right after donating, you will be offered a snack or drink in another area. After just ten to fifteen minutes you can leave and continue on with your daily schedule and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment that your donation is helping to save lives.
Remember, you can also donate a car to the American Red Cross and make a difference.
