The types of cancer most seen in children are different than what is seen in adults. Although there are other rare types, here are the most common types of cancer in kids:
Cancers of the blood and bone marrow are called leukemias and they are the most common of all childhood cancers accounting for 34%. Acute lymphocytic leukemia is the most common.
2. Brain / nervous system tumors
The second most common type of cancer in kids are brain tumors along with various other nervous system tumors. These make up approximately 27% of childhood cancers. The lower parts of the brain is where most of these brain tumors begin, like the brainstem or cerebellum.
This type of cancer begins in the early development of nerve cells found in a growing fetus or embryo. It happens to young children or infants and accounts for 7% of childhood cancers.
4. Wilms tumor
About 5% of childhood cancers is Wilms tumor which starts in one or both kidneys. It is most common with kids around 3 to 4 years of age. It may appear as a lump or swelling in the abdomen.
Cancers that originate in the various cells of the immune system are called lymphocytes. They typically affect lymph nodes or lymph tissues.
This cancer begins in cells that grow into skeletal muscles. This can occur in the neck, head, abdomen, pelvis, groin, or in one leg or arm. This makes up about 3% of childhood cancers.
About 3% of cancer in children is cancer of the eye called retinoblastoma. Typically is happens to children when they are near two years old. This cancer it usually found when a parent or adults notices that a child’s eye looks odd.
8. Bone cancer
Cancers that start inside the bone are most common in older kids and teenagers, however they can occur at any age.
