On January 11th, it was National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. We have teamed up with RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) which is America’s largest anti-sexual violence organization to bring you some ways you can prevent human trafficking that leads to so many young people being sexually assaulted.

RAINN has helped over 2.5 million individuals since 1994 through victim services, education and policy. You can support RAINN in this important cause with your car donation through Donate-a-Car. Out of every dollar that RAINN receives from your car donation, 93 cents goes directly to helping survivors and preventing sexual violence.

Five Ways You Can Help Prevent Human Sex Trafficking

1. Learn To Identify The Signs.

Whether you are at the airport, on a bus, in a hotel or in some other public place, learn to recognize what a victim of sex trafficking looks like so you can help them. Here are some red flags to watch for:

  • Appear fearful, anxious or paranoid
  • Avoids eye contact
  • Looks like they are in a relationship with a person who is dominating
  • Doesn’t seem to be in control of their own finances
  • Signs of depression, crying and sad
  • Signs of physical abuse such as unexplained cuts or bruises
  • No identification like a passport, drivers licence, etc
  • Cannot leave their job or residence
  • Seems fearful of law enforcement or getting assistance from the outside
  • Is never alone – always has someone answering questions for them or translating for them
  • Seems secretive about where they reside
  • Details of their story appear inconsistent
  • Is underage and providing commercial sex acts
  • Unwillingly giving commercial sex acts at any age
  • Recently arrived in America and does not speak English

2. Report Your Suspicions.

If you see suspicious activity that you believe might be connected to sex trafficking, call the 24-hr National Human Trafficking Resource Center: 1-888-373-7888. Or call 911. Your alertness, whether checking into a hotel room, stopping at a gas station, or being an Uber driver may help rescue a person from sex trafficking.

3. Get Educated.

The more knowledge you have about what human sex trafficking is, the more equipped and better prepared you will be to stop it. Listen to experts, read articles and books, and watch videos to learn as much as you can.

4. Help Raise Awareness.

Start within your family and circle of friends and raise awareness with them. Continue on to your work associates, faith based groups, local churches and even your local legislators and politicians. Make sure that the schools closeby are mindful of human sex trafficking, and have strategies in place to prevent the children in their schools from becoming victims.

5. Do Something.

Take action by becoming an spokesperson about human sex trafficking. Write to your local politicians and newspapers about the issues, encouraging them to address the issue. Speak out to those within the circles that you are involved with. Find the anti-trafficking causes in your area or city and become involved. The more people that are involved and educated, the more children and individuals can be rescued and prevented from becoming human trafficking victims.
