Here are 6 Ways to Help Keep Your Kidneys Healthy:


1. Drink Water

Keeping hydrated helps your kidneys function properly. Be sure to drink more water than usual during hot weather or when exercising vigorously to make up for fluid lost due to sweat.


2. Eat Healthy Foods

Most kidney problems come from medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Follow a diet of healthy eating to manage your weight and blood pressure. A healthy diet can prevent diabetes and blood pressure with can help keep your kidneys in good condition.


3. Exercise Consistently

Regular exercise can help decrease weight gain and stave off high blood pressure. Watch your blood pressure and have it check regularly, and if it gets higher than it should be, change your lifestyle to bring it back down.


4. Do Not Smoke

Quit smoking if you do smoke, and limit alcohol to a one small drink a day. Smoking and drinking too much can raise your blood pressure which is one of the most common causes of kidney disease.


5. Limit Over-the-Counter Medications

Pain killers like naproxen (NSAIDs) and ibuprofen if taken too much or over a long period of time can cause kidney damage. If you take these for arthritis or chronic pain, speak with your doctor about monitoring the function of your kidneys or finding a different way to manage your pain.


6. Get Kidney Screenings

If you are at risk at all, get regular kidney function screenings.
