We all have to deal with a certain amount of stress and anxiety. But at times anxiety can overcome us and keep us from handling everyday things.

We’ve learned from Mental Health America that there are three areas to focus on when managing your anxiety. Please consider helping Mental Health America in promoting the overall mental health of America by donating your car to them through our easy online form, or by calling us at 1-800-237-5714.

MIND

  • Admit that you cannot control everything. Get a perspective on your stress: is what you’re feeling really as awful as you think?
  • Do your best. Be proud of what you have done instead of trying to be perfect. Every effort counts.
  • Keep a positive outlook. Work to replace negative thoughts with thoughts that are more positive.

BODY

  • Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption. They can worsen anxiety Alcohol and caffeine can aggravate anxiety and even set off panic attacks. Drink water instead.
  • Eat healthy meals. Make sure you do not skip a meal and keep well-balanced energy-boosting foods on hand.
  • Get plenty of  sleep. Your body needs more sleep when it is stressed. Be sure to get 8 hours of sleep per night!
  • Exercise each day. You will feel better and help maintain your health with consistent exercising.

ACTION

  • Take slow deep breaths. Throughout the day, practice Inhaling and exhaling slowly as you feel stressed.
  • Slowly count to 10. Then repeat. Try counting to 20, if necessary.
  • Volunteer in your community. Give back or find some way to be active in your neighborhood. This can help establish a network of support network and allows you a break from everyday stress.
  • Take time for a break. Listen to music, get a massage, learn some relaxing techniques, practice yoga, or meditate. Stepping away from problems will help to clear your mind.
  • Get help on the web. Consider filling out a mental health screening online if you are grappling with anxiety and stress. Screening is private, free and anonymous and will help you learn about your mental health.
  • Consider talking to someone. Open up to your family and friends about how you are feeling overwhelmed. Tell them how they might help you. Be sure and speak to a doctor or counselor for professional help.
