The approximate amount of infants born each year with some kind of birth defect is 150,000. One of those frightening defects and the most common cause of death in young infants is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Though many of the specific causes are unknown, the SIDS Network in Connecticut is working to decrease the number of deceased infants and reach out to all those who have been affected. 4. Steer Clear of Harmful Substances
A leading cause of infant defects is the use of alcohol during pregnancy. Staying away from alcohol can largely decrease your risk and prevent lifetime learning, behavioral and physical disabilities and problems. Another way to avoid those same birth defects plus abnormal growths is to refrain from any kind of recreational and/or illegal drug use. The risk of serious birth complications and early birth can be minimized by staying away from drugs, alcohol and other known harmful substances.
5. Be Careful and Cautious with use of Medications
If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or even considering becoming pregnant, it’s important to tell your doctor and anyone who prescribes you medications. Specific medications have been linked to causing certain birth defects. It would also be smart to take preventative measures with any over the counter drug you may use or be using, such as herbal products, allergy remedies, pain relievers and skin treatments, and to discuss them with a health care professional. Taking these precautions can reduce your risks of defects.
