Sunscreen is generally the go-to method of protection from the UV rays of the sun. Parents want to protect their children and avoid the higher risks of skin cancer from getting too much sun.
We’ve teamed up with the American Children’s Cancer Foundation (ACCF), a charity located in New York, to bring you some alternatives to using sunscreen. The ACCF’s mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and their families affected by cancer, including skin cancer caused by UV ray damage. If you would like to help the ACCF in their cause, consider making a car donation in their behalf.
Why use a sunscreen alternative?
Most store-bought sunscreens block the body’s ability to absorb vitamin D which is a vital nutrient for the body’s function. They also contain chemicals and ingredients that can penetrate skin and disrupt hormones and cause other health problems. You might want to do a search on the ingredients of commercial sunscreen before using them.
If you would like to know some natural alternatives to commercial sunscreen that can protect skin without exposure to chemicals, here are some options:
1. Coconut Oil
Because coconut oil is high in antioxidants, it helps prevent burning and oxidative damage. You can use it as a base for a homemade sunscreen, or apply it directly to your skin every hour for maximum protection.
2. Red Raspberry Seed Oil
Red raspberry seed oil has a natural SPF of 28-50 and it protects against UVA and UVB rays. It is also comparable to titanium dioxide which is a common ingredient in commercial sunscreens.
3. Carrot Seed Oil
Having a natural SPF of 38-40, carrot seed oil protects the skin from oxidative particles (free radicals) and helps prevent and heal infection with it’s antiseptic properties.
