In Shelby Ohio, The ninth annual Polar Bear Challenge is under way. Every New Year’s Day residents take the plunge into the icy cold waters of Charles Mill Lake. They do so to honor loved ones who have battled cancer.
Event organizer Chad Schrack said the first Polar Bear Dip started with less than 40 people. Last Year in 2014 they saw 264 people take on the challenge, and brought in a record breaking $6,500 raised for The American Cancer Society and the LISA fund for colorectal cancer research.
Organizers of this event have helped raise about $45,000 for cancer research since the first dip took place, and look forward to keeping the tradition going strong for many years to come. Anyone who wants to take the plunge is welcome to do so, as long as participants wear shoes or slippers for safety measures. Anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
What better way than to ring in the New Year than to help a great cause. If taking a dip in freezing cold water doesn’t seem like your style, you can still help a worthy cause by gifting your used vehicle to the Cancer Research Institute. Together we can help make a positive change when ringing in 2015.
