As a way to encourage doing more good, the week of February 11th through Feb 17th has been declared “Random Acts of Kindness Week”. Usually we don’t have to look far for opportunities to do good for someone else, or to make a greater effort to serve and show compassion. But sometimes it is good to get ideas to know of those who could use some extra kindness.

One charity whose continued effort blesses thousands of our soldiers each year with letters, internet access, calling cards, care packages and moral support is Any Soldier. With a unique search capability, Any Soldier can show you a list of what the troops and soldiers want and need so that you can send it directly to them, even those overseas. You can send your letters and packages of support into the hands of soldiers who don’t get much mail or support from home, and it’s all shared.

Any Soldier has received the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence Award, meeting or exceeding the standards of 95% of all other charities in America. Your car donation to Any Soldier helps our service men and women receive more support and kindness.

Here is a list of Random Acts of Kindness Ideas to get you started:

  1. Donate an unwanted car to the Any Soldier charity to offer support and encouragement to a US Soldier.
  2. Write a positive comment on your favorite website, blog, or a friend’s social media account.
  3. Call someone you know is having a hard time and just listen.
  4. Pay for the meal of coffee for the person behind you in line.
  5. Take a coat or jacket you don’t wear anymore, and offer it to someone who could use it.
  6. Take some flowers or special treats to the nurses station of your nearest hospital.
  7. Write or email a letter of gratitude to a former teacher who made a difference in your life.
  8. Leave a box of treats in the mailbox for your mail carrier with a thank you note.
  9. Buy or make a dozen sandwiches and pass them out to the homeless in your area.
  10. Give at least 5 sincere compliments each day to people you see.
  11. Send uplifting and fun postcards to children who are sick in the hospital.
  12. Visit a senior center to spend some time listening and playing games with the lonely elderly.
  13. Make and deliver a meal to a neighbor or friend in need.
  14. Check in with someone you have been out of touch with to see how they are doing.
  15. Sign up to become an organ donor, it only takes a few minutes and you could save several lives.
  16. Bring in some food or snacks to work for your co-workers.
  17. Buy some gift cards and hand them out when you feel someone could use it.
  18. Take the time to help a family member and show interest in what they are doing.
  19. Give someone a “heart attack” by sticking cut out hearts on their door with uplifting words written on them.
  20. Purchase and deliver needed school supplies to your local school or child’s classroom.

Acts of kindness can also be less-noticable things like forgiving someone who spoke unkindly, not listening to or passing on gossip, letting another car in front of you, speaking words of gratitude each day and choosing to let go of unkind thoughts.

We can’t expect to see kindness if we aren’t teaching it and being an example of kindness ourselves. Remember to practice your random acts of kindness this week and all year long.
