Who Does UCP Serve?
UCP of Georgia serves both children and adults who struggle with a wide variety of disabilities including cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, traumatic brain injury, and spina bifida.
What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral palsy is a medical umbrella-like term that covers a wide range of brain (cerebral) and muscle (palsy) disabilities that affect a person’s ability to move, speak, see, learn, etc. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to a child before, during, or shortly after birth.
There is no cure for Cerebral Palsy, but with therapy and treatment their physical and mental condition can improve. There are over 17 million people with cerebral palsy worldwide.
What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a serious developmental disorder of the nervous system which impairs and individual’s ability to interact and communicate clearly with others. Also an umbrella medical term, ASD covers a wide range of disabilities associated with complex disorders of brain development.
There is no known cause for Autism and no known cure, but therapy can help improve quality of life and capacity. Over 3 million people in the United States alone have been diagnosed with ASD.
What is Traumatic Brain Injury?
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is characterized by serious brain dysfunction that has been caused by an outside force, typically a violent blow to the head from a sports injury or vehicle accident. Damage to the brain is unlike damage to other parts of a body, where physical damage is localized and predictable. TBI’s affect a person’s personality, mental capacity, memory, and basic skills.
No two TBI’s are the same and individualized care is essential to promote as much healing as possible. Over 200,000 TBI’s are reported every year in the United States.
What is Spina Bifida?
Spina Bifida is a congenital defect of the spine. It is caused when part of the spinal cord develops improperly in the womb and remains exposed through a gap in the backbone. It can cause paralysis of the lower limbs, and can sometimes cause mental handicap.
There is no exact cause of Spina Bifida, but scientist believe that it is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental triggers. 8 children a day are born with Spina Bifida and other spinal disorders.
